A few weeks ago I received this customer quilt. It was very badly pieced (and she knew it), but it is still a quilt worthy of being finished. I explained to her that the only thing I felt comfortable doing was an all over meander and that I couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be any puckers or pleats. She understood my terms and her only request was that I not put any stitches on the dolls.

I want to make sure that my customers know that every quilt is worthy of being finished! It doesn't matter your skill level, what matters is that you finish something that you started and made with your two hands. Don't be afraid to send me a less than perfect quilt (just don't expect custom quilting!)

This quilt has a story (doesn't every quilt?) A grandmother recently passed away. She had made graduation quilts for each of her grand daughters. These blocks were for the grand daughter graduating in a few weeks. The grandmother passed away before she could completely assemble the quilt top (hand stitched!) So one of the daughters, a non quilter, finished putting it together so that the grand daughter could have her graduation quilt. Once the top was pieced they contacted me to get it quilted.

 There was a lot of fullness but I was able to avid pleats and puckers. Well I did have to add some strategically placed pleats, but I added those right along the sashing so you can't even tell that they are there!

December Quilts

 The next three quilts were done by my customer Mare (pronounced Mary.) I quilted loops and stars on the two Christmas quilts and a stipple/meander on the table runner. Isn't the snowman quilt adorable?

 

 

This quilt was made by my customer Nanette. She requested an all over meander. She has plans to add applique in the border.

New Addition and a Finish

I’m so excited by our newest addition! I have acquired a gently loved HQ16 by Handi Quilter. It is an older 2006-ish model (before the tilt screens or updated lights.) It didn’t come with a table but my wonderful handy husband rigged this set up from a set of steel shelves from Home Depot.

He even cut the shelves down to be the perfect height for little ole me (5’ even.) It’s quite a bit heavier than my Brother 1300 I was using before so it requires a bit more force to move it around the tracks. The tracks themselves were not in the best shape with several nicks on the tracks and carriage. I was able to sand them out though.

I’ve heard good things about the edge rider wheels and tracks from Urban Elementz. They are supposed to really help the machine glide. They are rather pricey (around $500.) I don’t think I’ll buy them until I’ve had a chance to try them out in person.

I loaded up my first quilt, which happened to be a custom ordered Baby Name Quilt, and finished it off in about 30 minutes. It should have gone quicker but learning the placement of things and the quirks of a new machine/system is going to take some time. I’m really loving the stitch regulator and the 12” of sewing space (as opposed to the 3-5” I had before.)

Fabric: Kona Cotton “Snow” on front. Owl fabric on back found at Hancock Fabrics (long ago, no manufacturer info available on fabric.) Kona Cotton “Persimmon” for binding. Timeless Treasures Wimsy-C 3416 was used for the name.

This is another example of meander/stipple quilting. It is a great overall pattern for quilts that will see a lot of use and lots of washing. I love this backing print and have been hoarding it for quite some time. I believe it’s by Timeless Treasures and has a very lovely Asian feel.
